Upgrade / clean install ?

Okay,

My toaster (3.1.3) is no longer functioning very well.

SMTP is taking connections, but not reporting back to the client that it received it, causing some failures on the client end, but with the mail actually being sent.  Delays of 1-2 minute when connecting.  All this started about 2 weeks ago, when I got bombed with spam.

So, I would like to upgrade.  Since it's an older toaster, I was thinking that I just move the users Maildir, remove the existing mail setup, and start over clean, and move the Maildir back.  (Running BSD 4.9)  Several of my users have mail in there mailbox, so I can't just wipe it.

Any thoughts, suggestions on doing this?
