Help a Mac Newbie

Hello-

I am new to mac, i just made the change over from being a long time win user. I got myself a macbook pro. My friend gave a G5 Dual 2.7 and right now it is being use as a CD player because I was not sure what to do with it. Both the laptop and the G5 tower run Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard. I was thinking about getting a .mac account but then I saw this site and seeing I can make my own. Is this a project a newbie can handle? Is there a step by step i.e. a dummies guide to follow?
